Is CBD Oil Helpful for Restless Legs?

I think many people with restless legs have considered trying CBD oil to find out if it could help them ease their symptoms of RLS. At least I did.

At the same time, I can also imagine that you are a bit hesitant to just take something that you don’t know exactly what it does. In such cases, I always want to check as closely as possible what the possible side effects of such a drug are.

When I think of CBD, I think of cannabis and the risk of addiction. However, I have also heard that taking CBD oil is really different from smoking soft drugs such as weed, hash or marijuana.

So, good to get some clarity on this.

What is CBD oil

CBD oil is made from a hemp plant. The hemp plant is part of a plant species known as cannabis sativa. CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol. This substance is found in the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant.

Various products are made from the substance CBD. CBD oil is the most popular of these. In principle, the drops are easy to dose and are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.

With CBD oil you can distinguish between two variants. In the first variant, in addition to CBD, other substances from the hemp plant also end up in the oil. This variant is called RAW. Another extraction method leaves only CBD as a cannabinoid. The latter is seen as the pure form (PURE).

The two variants mentioned above each have their own taste. The variant called RAW tastes a bit bitter. The other variant, called PUUR, has a softer and nutty taste.

The CBD oil that is available in (online) stores is not all of the same quality. The percentage of CBD in the oil also differs per bottle. The higher the percentage of CBD in the oil, the stronger the effect.

CBD versus THC

If you use cannabis oil, it is important to be aware that it can contain both CBD and THC. THC stands for TetraHydraCannabinol (in full: delta-9-tetrahydracannabinol).

CBD-only cannabis oil will not get you high. Of cannabis oil that contains THC, yes. THC has a different effect on your body (and mind) than CBD, and other side effects. Addiction is a risk with THC.

CBD-only cannabis oil is freely available. In addition to CBD, medicinal cannabis oil (‘weed oil’) also contains THC and has been available with a doctor’s prescription since 2015.

The advantage of medicinal cannabis oil is that the components and the exact proportions are known and fixed. You just have to wait and see with other suppliers. With all the associated risks.

Dosage

Dosage of CBD oil requires the necessary attention.

First of all, CBD oil does not always contain the same percentage of CBD. There are many providers who each market their own variant of the product. There may also be all kinds of other substances in the product. These are excipients (for example olive oil, coconut oil or water) or by-products of the hemp plant (other cannabinoids).

Second, not everyone benefits from the same amount. Depending on age, weight and state of health, each body reacts in its own way.

It is good to take a build-up period into account. It is advisable to start with a low dose. It can take a few weeks before you notice any of the CBD.

Before you just start using CBD oil, it is better to contact your doctor first. The CBD may have an unfavorable interaction with medicines that you are taking or it is unwise in your situation to take this product.

Restless legs

I don’t know if CBD oil helps with restless legs. If I go by what fellow sufferers say, some people benefit and others don’t. Maybe it will help you fall asleep more easily or relax better. That is of course also worth something.

CBD oil is not cheap, especially if you opt for more expensive variants that you are more sure of that you will get quality.

Personally, I don’t know if I’ll ever buy a bottle. I think I’ll just keep it in mind as a possibility.
